UEFA Conference League Final 2026: Preview
In its 102-year history, Rayo has won nothing except for a handful of promotions. In fact, this UECL final is the first final they have reached since any competition. And they’re here under a rookie coach who should be long gone. Inigo Perez, then assistant to Andoni Iraola, was due to follow him to Bournemouth four years ago but did not obtain a work permit. Instead, he was the one who took the reins when Iraola’s replacement was fired.
Describing Iraola as a difficult actor to follow would be an understatement, but Perez already ranks alongside his great former mentor in the Vallecas pantheon. He will be alone if Rayo wins the title tonight.
There are parallels with Palace, who won their first major title 12 months ago, in their 119th year. Oliver Glasner is distinctly Iraola in his knack for doing more with less by developing players within a clearly defined system that suits them, and a year on from that momentous FA Cup triumph, the Austrian is set to lead the club to a third piece of major silverware in his final act.
Palace have been slow to adapt to the European stage, with their 10th place finish in the league stage necessitating a playoff for a place in the knockout stages. However, a resounding victory over Fiorentina put them at ease. With nine goals, Ismaila Sarr is the Conference League’s top scorer, while Adam Wharton and Jean-Philippe Mateta are pursued by Europe’s biggest clubs.
Rayo’s run to the final was quieter, in part due to the team as a whole sharing the goal burden, which suits Perez just fine. With four goals, Alemao is El Matagigantes’ top scorer in the competition, with the Brazilian number 9 ably supported by veteran midfielders Alvaro Garcia and Isi Palazon.
Although this was Palace’s first European final, Glasner won the Europa League with Frankfurt and guided the Eagles to FA Cup and Community Shield glory, masterminding victories over Man City and Liverpool. Rayo have never played in a final of any kind before, but they have impressed in the big games this season, holding Barcelona and Real Madrid to a draw and beating Villarreal and Atletico.
For both clubs, the UECL title is their only way to return to Europe next season.
