Tottenham will be relegated from the top flight for the first time in 49 years this Sunday if they lose to Everton and West Ham beat Leeds. If that happens, it would be seen as the most stunning fall from grace since Juventus were kicked out of Serie A in 2006 following the Calciopoli scandal.
However, any other combination of results would see Nuno Espírito Santo’s men fall through the cracks and advance to the Championship alongside Wolves and Burnley, each of whose relegation was confirmed several weeks ago.
With two points ahead of West Ham, Tottenham are firmly in control. Roberto de Zerbi’s men also have a vastly superior goal difference, so if the teams finished level on points – which would be the case if Tottenham drew and West Ham won theirs – Spurs would be safe.
Although neither Everton nor Leeds have anything to play for, the occasion should make them focus. Daniel Farke’s men are unbeaten in eight league matches and have won four of them, a rich run of form who have only recently achieved their own Premier League status. Everton are without a win for six years and last kept a clean sheet two months ago, but the goals are still coming for David Moyes’ men.
The reverse matches have also resulted in victories for Leeds and Tottenham.
If Spurs were to hang on, they would owe a huge debt of gratitude to Aston Villa, who fielded a seriously weakened team against them earlier this month. Shortly after, VAR denied the Hammers a goal that would have secured them an exciting point against Arsenal.
Whatever happens, it won’t be down to one game or one decision. Tottenham are one of the richest football clubs in the world, one of the instigators of the Premier League and a co-conspirator of the Super League. West Ham, while no stranger to relegation, are not far from it. The fate of both clubs arguably stems from years of mismanagement at board level.

What are the Premier League Europe scenarios?
The race for European places is extremely convoluted.
Arsenal, Man City and Man Utd have clinched the top three spots and will qualify for the Champions League no matter what happens on the final day of the Premier League season.
Aston Villa (4th, 62 points) also qualified for the Champions League thanks to their victory in the Europa League. Liverpool (5th, 59 points), Bournemouth (6th, 56 points) and Brighton (7th, 53 points) each maintain their UCL aspirations.
If Liverpool were to overtake Aston Villa, each of the best six teams would reach the Champions League, with the 7th placed team qualifying for the Europa League.
However, if Unai Emery’s men finished 4th, the 5th team would qualify for the UCL, while those 6th and 7th would earn places in the Europa League.
Bournemouth, Brighton, Chelsea (52 points), Brentford (52 points) and Sunderland (51 points) are all in the Europa League. Crystal Palace (15th, 45 points) could also qualify by winning the Conference League.
Chelsea currently occupy the only place in the Conference League, but once the field is reshuffled on Sunday, it could belong to Brighton, Brentford or Sunderland instead.
What is the relegation situation in the Premier League?
Either West Ham (18th, 36 points) or Tottenham (17th, 38 points) will be relegated on the last day of the Premier League.
However, the only scenario in which Spurs would lose is if they lost to Everton. And West Ham beat Leeds.
West Ham would go down even if they finished level on points with Tottenham. Indeed, Spurs’ goal difference is -10 and the Hammers’ is -22, which would require a ridiculous 12-goal swing in West Ham’s favor.
Wolves (20th, 19 points) and Burnley (19th, 21 points) have already been relegated, but the Old Gold could still salvage some pride by edging out the Clarets.
