IHC calls for report on campus drug control

ISLAMABAD:

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Tuesday sought a report from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) regarding measures taken against drug abuse in universities in the federal capital.

He directed the Federal Ministry of Education to seek approval from the Federal Government for the rules relating to the eradication of narcotics.

The court also ordered the HEC to include the Anti-Drug Force (ANF) and police officials in the monitoring committee formed to oversee anti-drug measures in educational institutions.

He also asked the media to carry out anti-narcotics awareness campaigns during prime time and sought a report from the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) in this regard.

Justice Raja Inaam Ameen Minhas was hearing a petition seeking measures to eliminate drug abuse in educational institutions in the federal capital.

During the hearing, advocate Kashif Ali Malik, appearing for the petitioner organization Lucky Foundation, informed the court that a drug-related case was underway in Karachi in which couriers and delivery boys were also allegedly involved.

Justice Minhas observed that he had stated from day one that the narcotics were transported through couriers and couriers.

HEC officials informed the court that designated areas had been allocated in educational institutions for couriers and delivery staff. They said every courier or delivery person entering the premises was screened before being allowed access.

Advocate Malik argued that after universities and colleges, narcotics have now also become common in schools and even seventh and eighth grade students are consuming drugs.

The court ordered that regular monitoring be carried out at educational institutions and a report submitted. He also directed the Islamabad district administration to take action against narcotics and ensure monitoring.

The IHC further directed the Islamabad Police to take action against drugs and carry out surveillance in this regard. Later, the court adjourned the further hearing till the last week of June.
