Jason Momoa leaves ‘Helldivers’

Jason Momoa has withdrawn from the upcoming film adaptation of the hit video game franchise Helldiversewhich means Sony Pictures is now looking for a new leader.

Despite the loss of its big star, the project continues to move forward under the direction of Justin Lin.

The feature film is produced by PlayStation Productions and already has a theatrical release date set for November 10, 2027.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed the news of Momoa’s departure, just months after it was first announced in February that he would be taking on the lead role.

While losing the Aquaman the actor is a bit of a blow, the studio isn’t slowing down.

They actually introduced the film to the public during their CinemaCon presentation earlier this year, after officially announcing the project at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show (CES).

Even with the casting shakeup, the creative team behind the scenes remains strong.

The screenplay has already been written by Gary Dauberman, a screenwriter who is familiar with major franchises having worked on He and its sequel, as well as the adaptation of the game Until dawn.

In addition to directing, Justin Lin is also producing the film alongside Hutch Parker and Asad Qizilbash, keeping the high-profile sci-fi action film on track for a 2027 debut.
