Jazz Chisholm Jr. hasn’t yet mastered the ABS challenge system, but Friday’s crash may have been his worst.

The New York Yankees second baseman threw six challenges, but was successful only once.

On Friday, he was called for strikes on a full count, resulting in a helmet hit in an attempt to reach first base.

However, the ABS system showed that the ball was entirely in the strike zone.

“You just have to laugh at that point,” Chisholm said.

Fortunately, the Yankees were beating the Houston Astros 12-4 at the time, so he probably didn’t receive much attention from manager Aaron Boone.

“We were winning, it’s a breeze. You have to laugh at some things. Sometimes you just have to laugh at yourself and walk away,” Chisholm said.

Chisholm then joked that he would fine himself $1,000.

“After this, I have to do something for the team that’s worth at least $1,000.”

Chisholm is one of two players in the league to complete at least six challenges and succeed in just one, along with Gunnar Henderson. Among those who have completed at least six challenges, their success rate of 17% is the lowest in the sport (Augustin Ramirez is 0 of 5 and Andres Gimenez is 0 of 4).

The Yankees as a whole are one of the worst teams on tough pitches as hitters — their 43% knockdown rate is the eighth-worst mark in the league, and that includes starting the season 11 out of 13. They do, however, rank 15th (63%) in infield knockdowns.
