Geno Smith’s offseason continues to involve law enforcement after a traffic stop in Florida last week.

Smith, who returned to the New York Jets this year after one season with the Las Vegas Raiders, was stopped by a Davie Police Department officer on July 6 after being accused of exceeding the speed limit in a 45 mph zone.

The incident was captured on police body camera, where Smith, driving a 2025 Aston Martin, received a compliment from the officer conducting the traffic stop before telling him what he had done wrong.

“All right, sir,” the officer is heard telling Smith in the body camera footage. “Nice car. Seventy miles an hour, man. That’s too fast for 45.”

Smith was then asked to provide the officer with his license and registration, but he said he did not have any. He also noted that the vehicle was registered to a friend.

“I live here; my license and everything is in my house,” Smith told the officer.

After taking down Smith’s information, the officer told him to always carry his ID, to which the quarterback responded, “That’s bad.” »

The officer returned to Smith’s vehicle with two tickets, one for failure to present his license during the traffic stop and the other for illegal speed.

This is the third time this offseason Smith has had to speak to Davie police. In April, he was driving a Rolls Royce with inappropriate tags, where he and the officer got into quite an exchange in another body camera moment. Smith ended up telling the officer to “do his job better” despite being told that Smith’s offense was “a tag not assigned to the vehicle.”

A more serious conversation with officers took place when a woman claimed on Instagram in June that Smith “beat me because he HATES taking care of his special needs child and can’t be left alone with him because he (sic) prefers to watch sex online and play Call of Duty.”

The California Post and ESPN reported that cops were called to Smith’s Davie home, but no arrests were made. The investigation has since been closed, with no charges filed against Smith in the case, according to multiple reports.

Smith is preparing for his 13th season in the NFL, but his fifth with the Jets after playing his first four years with the organization that took him in the second round to West Virginia in 2013.

Smith’s first stint in New York was a fairly turbulent time, which included a demotion after starting his first two seasons and being punched in the face by Jets teammate IK Enemkpali during a locker room altercation in 2015. The punch broke his jaw and required surgery that sidelined Smith for weeks.

Smith has been a different quarterback and person since then, maturing on and off the field when given opportunities elsewhere. However, it was with Pete Carroll and the Seattle Seahawks that Smith experienced a career revitalization, winning the starting job in 2022 and taking the Seahawks to 9-8 that year to earn his first Pro Bowl nod.

The quarterback spent five years in Seattle before being traded to the Raiders before last season. But after going 2-13 in his 15 starts there, the Raiders sent Smith back to the Jets.
