First revealed at the BookCon 2026 event in New York last month, Kobo announced a line of limited-edition “collector’s cases” with “whimsical” and colorful designs. The cases are indeed beautiful, ranging from a leafy Green Canopy option to the more fun and cheerful Botanical Bliss and each model is available for all three 2024 e-reader versions: the Kobo Libra Color, Clara BW and Clara Color.
They’re already listed for purchase on the Kobo websites in the US and UK, and Australians will be able to buy them from May 12 – the smaller cases cost $29.99 / £24.99 / AU$44.95, while a Libra Color collector’s case will set you back $39.99 / £34.99 / AU$49.95.
Analysis: the Kobo Elipsa 2E is no longer comparable
I make no secret of the fact that I have a weakness for Kobo’s user interface and have been using the Kobo Elipsa 2E since its release in 2023 as an e-reader and digital laptop. At the time, I liked it so much that I called it a real competitor to the Kindle Scribe in my review of the Kobo Elipsa 2E, but I replaced it with the 2nd generation Kindle Scribe in 2025 because the latter gave me a better reading and writing experience. In fact, I find the Onyx Boox Go 10.3 a better digital laptop even though it doesn’t have a headlamp.
I always like Kobo’s advanced laptops, but the hard-nibbed Kobo Stylus 2 isn’t as pleasant to use as Amazon’s Premium Stylus or the many other styluses that come with their respective tablets. Almost every other stylus I’ve tried, including ViWood’s, offers a smoother, ballpoint-like experience that you won’t get with the Kobo Stylus 2.
The Kindle Scribe 2024’s ambient light sensor makes the screen brighter, and the 300 ppi resolution puts the Elipsa’s 227 ppi screen to shame. In fact, most 10-inch monochrome digital laptops released in 2025 have a 300 ppi screen.
Several Boox tablets have been released since the Elipsa 2E and while I don’t expect Kobo to match that frequency (I really hope not because Boox devices aren’t quite perfect), even Amazon has released new Scribe models in 2024 and 2025!
If you really want a Kobo note-taker, the Libra Color is still my pick among the best e-readers to buy (and the Kobo Sage has been discontinued), but the Kobo Stylus 2 still isn’t the nicest pen to write on, so a refresh of a few hardware items is overdue.
So come on Kobo, where is the new Elipsa?
