Two British MPs have been expelled from the House of Commons after accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of lying.
Reform UK’s Lee Anderson and Your Party’s Zara Sultana were both kicked out of Parliament after accusing Prime Minister Starmer of lying in a statement regarding the appointment of a former UK ambassador to the US, Lord Peter Mandelson.
For those who don’t know, Mandelson was removed from his position after the Epstein documents, released by the US Department of Justice, accused him of having close ties to disgraced and convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
During Monday’s session, Anderson said: “The Prime Minister’s problem is that no one believes him. The public does not believe him. Members on this side of the House do not believe him. His own gullible backbenchers do not believe him. So, does the Prime Minister agree with me, he lied?”
Commons Speaker Lindsay Hoyle immediately intervened and asked him to retract his remarks; however, the Reform MP refused, saying: “I won’t take it out. That man couldn’t lie straight in bed.”
He was asked to leave.
Later in the season, MP Zarah Sultana called the prime minister a “blatant liar” and accused him of putting the nation under pressure.
The speaker asked her to leave but she insisted on staying. MPs later voted in favor of a motion to suspend Ms Sultana from the services of the House. It was presented by the government whip, General Kitchen.
The suspension did not deter her as she doubled down on her support for Prime Minister Starmer and called for his resignation. Writing on X, Ms Sultana wrote: “Keir Starmer is a shameless liar and if he had any decency he would resign.”
The suspension marks the first such action in the British Parliament since 2022. House of Commons rules prohibit MPs from accusing each other of lying or deliberately misleading.
