LAHORE: Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) suspended three officials after Defense Minister Khawaja Asif alleged that a transformer in a village linked to one of its employees was replaced following payment of a bribe of Rs 80,000.
According to the executive engineer (XEN) of LESCO’s Phool Nagar division, two linemen and a line superintendent were suspended following the complaint.
XEN said a 200-kilowatt transformer had blown and a 100-kilowatt transformer was being installed in its place. However, he claimed that the Asif coordinator and the villagers stopped the LESCO team from carrying out the installation.
The official further said that he personally visited the village and no one provided any proof that money was paid to LESCO employees.
According to LESCO sources, an individual collected money from villagers, but this person had no connection with the electricity company.
Meanwhile, Federal Minister for Energy Division Awais Leghari said action had been taken against those affected following the Defense Minister’s remarks regarding LESCO.
Leghari said Asif’s statement reflected a process of personal accountability.
