One of the most memorable moments of the 2026 Winter Olympics came early, when skier Lindsey Vonn delivered a courageous performance for the ages by competing at age 41 just a week after injuring her knee in a fall.

Unfortunately, as admirable as her perseverance was, she was seriously injured in another fall just 13 seconds into her run in the women’s downhill final.

Five months later, Vonn is still dealing with her injuries.

“It’s been a very slow process,” Vonn told People while attending the ESPYs on Wednesday in New York. “It’s been five months since I’ve been able to go to the gym in any meaningful way. And walking is still very difficult for me. My ankle is still broken.”

Whatever the outcome, his decision to attempt the race remains one of the bravest moments of the Games.

Remember when I mentioned this injury before the Olympics? This wasn’t just a minor bump in the road; it was a completely torn ACL.

His courage was not questioned, but the consequences were difficult.

“I was in a wheelchair for so long, on crutches for so long,” Vonn said. “Honestly, it had been almost three and a half months since I was able to walk without assistance. I was very emotional when I was able to walk on my own.”

This week, Vonn posted an update on her recovery and said she has a “very long road ahead.”
