As LIV Golf teeters on the brink of extinction, what will its legacy be?

Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) has announced it will end its financial support for LIV Golf at the end of the 2026 season, leaving its long-term future in question. LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam says LIV Golf has brought some positives to the sport.

“I mean, overall, I think it’s had some positives, but overall, I think, you know, it hasn’t really changed that much,” Sorenstam told PK Press Club Digital in a recent interview.

“It certainly interrupted the golf game,” Sorenstam added with a laugh. “I think that’s why we’re seeing changes on the PGA Tour.”

The PGA Tour recently announced sweeping changes to its format, and Sorenstam attributed that to LIV Golf.

“I mean, they don’t see what they had before LIV was viable, apparently, and so they changed a lot of things. The purses went up, which is obviously great for the players.”

The golf legend said she liked the money being invested in the sport, but didn’t think LIV Golf was set up for long-term success with its business model.

“I think in some ways, from the outside looking in, it’s always easy to say, but I don’t think anyone thought it was a great business model. There was a lot of money in the sport, which I welcome, but there didn’t seem to be a lot of investment. So I think it was difficult to just sustain it,” Sorenstam told PK Press Club Digital.

“So interesting to see how this plays out. This year will definitely be eye-opening. But we’re already seeing players jumping ship and out there.”

Sorenstam will compete in the American Century Championship July 10-12 at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe.

She is one of the favorites to win the tournament. Sorenstam, who won 72 LPGA Tour tournaments, including 10 majors, during her illustrious career, will raise awareness of the Annika Foundation.

“We’re trying to empower and advance young women through golf, but also in life, through different life skills and it’s been really rewarding and satisfying to see how far women’s golf has come and how many of these young women are chasing their dreams. It’s been a lot of fun and seeing the difference we’re making in these young women’s lives,” Sorenstam said.

With the Stableford scoring format, Sorenstam spoke about the need to be more aggressive and pursue more birdies and eagles. The tournament will be broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
