Mariska Hargitay revealed she was moved to tears after seeing Christopher Meloni’s emotional reaction to the cancellation of Law and order: organized crime, describing it as the closing of an important chapter for her co-star and longtime friend.
Talk to AdditionalHargitay said she watched Meloni’s Instagram video about the show ending and was immediately upset.
“I saw it and at first I burst into tears,” she said.
“I immediately burst into tears because it is, just like [Meloni] said, and he was so beautiful and open, because it’s been a great adventure. And it was so beautiful and intimate and it played such an important role in his life and it changed his life.”
She also said the news came as a real shock.
“Chris is working and in demand and he’s such a magnificent actor. But it’s, in a way, the closing of a chapter. So when that happens, you have to take inventory. It’s a real marker in your life.”
Law and order: organized crime was officially canceled after five seasons earlier this month.
Meloni marked the occasion with a heartfelt video on Instagram.
“I wanted to take this moment to thank the fans who not only helped bring life and longevity to the character of Elliot Stabler, but also for standing by him and welcoming him back. It’s been a great journey,” he said.
The series, which premiered in 2021, followed Stabler, the character Meloni first played. Law and order: Special Victims Unit, as he returned to New York after a decade away to rebuild his life and take on organized crime.
It was broadcast on BNC for his first four seasons before moving Peacock for its fifth and final season, which ended in June 2025.
The cast also included Danielle Moné Truitt, Rick Gonzalez, Ainsley Seiger and Dean Norris.
