The mutants are coming. Indeed, while Marvel is hard at work developing another X-Men movie – one that will officially introduce a new version of the superteam into the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) – it won’t be long before they return to the big screen. Well, provided you don’t consider its potential launch in 2028 a long wait…
But I digress. With San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) 2026 almost upon us and speculation that some sort of X-Men announcement will be made at the fan expo, interest in the next live-action X-Men movie couldn’t be higher. Read on to find out everything we know so far about the film that is likely to usher in version 2.0 of the MCU.
X-Men movie release date: what we know
Kevin Feige confirms that Jake Schreier’s ‘X-MEN’ film will be released after ‘AVENGERS: SECRET WARS’.July 11, 2026
Marvel has not yet confirmed the release date of its X-Men film. After all, we’re still in the early stages of development, so barring a surprise announcement at SDCC 2026, it will be a while before we know more.
That said, this film is high on Marvel’s priority list. Speaking in late 2024, company president Kevin Feige said the future of the MCU will be all about the X-Men after the Multiverse saga ends with next year’s film. Avengers: Secret Wars.
Most recently, Feige hinted (see the X/Twitter post above) that the new X-Men movie would be the first film to arrive after the sixth Avengers installment. With this film scheduled for release in December 2027, we shouldn’t expect the MCU’s first mutant-led project until 2028.
Marvel’s X-Men movie trailer: is there one?
Unsurprisingly, no. In fact, assuming Marvel returns to the Hall H panel at SDCC 2028, I’d be surprised if we get official footage before then.
Once a teaser is released, I’ll update this section – but you’ll be waiting a long time for one!
Marvel’s X-Men Spark Rumors
Possible spoilers follow for Marvel’s X-Men movie.
As expected, no one has yet been confirmed to appear in Marvel’s X-Men movie. However, numerous rumors have surfaced – and continue to circulate – about who was involved. So let’s take a look at some of the most important ones.
For starters, a report that circulated in July 2025 suggested that Marvel was eyeing rising stars rather than established names for its X-Men reboot. The reason? The Disney subsidiary wants to make films more cheaply – which means it’s not looking to pay more for stars.
And yet, the vast majority of actors who have been attached to roles in Marvel’s mutant-led film are what I consider household names.
One of these stars is Stranger Things Sadie Sink, former student. After being cast as a mysterious character in Spider-Man: A Whole New Daythe long-standing rumor is that Sink will play Jean Grey. If this is true – and there is now plenty of evidence to suggest so – we will almost certainly see her in this film.
Who else might appear? Back in May, the rumor mill was buzzing with reports of other potential X-Men cast members, including speculation that Bryan Cranston would play Charles Xavier/Professor
However, other actors have since been linked to two of these roles. As of mid-July, Adam Driver was reportedly cast as Magneto, while Patrick Wilson was cast as Professor X (according to Knightedgemedia). For what it’s worth, Apocalyptic Horseman, a reliable industry insider, said the latter might not be true.
Elsewhere, Obsession Star India Navarrette revealed that she recently met with new X-Men director Jake Schreier, prompting fans to cast her in various mutant roles. Meanwhile, after unreliable leaker Jeff Sneider claimed that Avatar star Trinity Jo-Li Bliss had been cast to play Jubilee, Bliss herself denied the report (via The Direct).
Finally, Lee Sung Jin, one of the co-writers of this film, told Collider that he is a big fan of Rémy LeBeau/Gambit. So don’t be surprised if we see a new iteration of the Ragin’ Cajun as part of this entire film.
Marvel’s X-Men Movie Plot Rumors
You already know what I’m going to say here, right? Surprise, surprise, Marvel’s X-Men reboot doesn’t have a synopsis yet.
Thanks to Schreier and Jin, we got a glimpse into their creative process for the film, including the key inspiration behind the story they want to tell.
While speaking with Deadline, Jin also explained that Feige wanted him, co-writer Joanna Calo and Schreier to “take a big turn and start over.” [and] don’t be beholden to any of the films that came before it.”
Expect an all-new version – in a live-action sense, anyway – of the iconic supergroup created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby when their next film hits theaters.
Where can I watch the X-Men movies?
You can watch all the X-Men movies live on Disney+, aka one of the best streaming services in the world. Disney’s main streamer has been hosting these films since the House of Mouse purchased 20th Century Fox in March 2019. You can even find out how to watch the X-Men movies in order with our help while you’re here.
In addition, X-Men: The Animated Series and its sequel X-Men 97 are also available on Disney+. Not a subscriber? Find out if a Disney+ free trial is available or what the price of Disney+ is in your area if you want to sign up.
What future for the X-Men in the MCU?
In short: we have no idea. Marvel has yet to get this film off the ground, and as Schreier explained during an interview with Collider, this has to be a major success if the franchise is to continue into Marvel Phase 7 and beyond.
If successful, the X-Men could become one of the cornerstones of the next era of the MCU. But what if that’s not the case? Frankly, this is a scenario you shouldn’t think about. The X-Men are one of the most popular superhero teams of all time, so if they can’t help support Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut in a post-Multiverse Saga world, who can?
