MetLife Stadium not on fire, officials confirm fire hit nearby building

Thick black smoke is visible near MetLife Stadium, venue of the FIFA World Cup final.

This raises fears that the place is on fire. But the authorities confirm that there is no fire in the stadium.

The smoke was coming from a large, two-alarm fire at a warehouse on Washington Avenue in Carlstadt, a small community less than three miles from the New York Jets and Giants football stadiums.

Local police were alerted to the fire at 9:50 a.m. ET. Fire departments dispatched to the site included Wallington Engine Co. 202, commonly known as “The Hotshots.” The fire is currently said to be under control and no injuries have been reported yet.

Photos posted on social media suggested from certain angles that smoke was rising from the 82,500-seat stadium.

The site is expected to host 8 matches, including the final. The first FIFA World Cup match is scheduled for June 13 between Brazil and Morocco in Group C.

Recently, the authorities installed a natural grass field in the stadium.
