Miami Marlins Post Best Record in MLB June 17-5 in Wild Card Playoffs

For the entire month of June, one team trampled all of Major League Baseball under its feet, being nearly unbeatable at home and thus climbing the playoff rankings.

Just hearing that, you’re probably thinking I’m talking about one of the usual suspects.

The New York Yankees? What about the Los Angeles Dodgers? Or maybe it’s the Atlanta Braves making one of their patented runs?

No, no and no.

The team I’m referring to is none other than the Miami Marlins, who own an MLB-best 17-5 record through June and are coming off a shutout Friday night on the road against fellow Wild Card hopefuls the St. Louis Cardinals.

It’s hard to say why the Marlins are having the kind of success they’re having in June.

The talent was always there, no matter how young he was. I even wrote about the potential of Fightin’ Fish back in April.

But I’m not sure even the most optimistic Marlins fan could have seen this coming.

One of the main keys to their success has been their offense, but not in the conventional sense.

The Chicks love the long ball, of course, but Miami takes more of a small ball approach to scoring points, and it’s working wonderfully lately.

MLB’s offense has increased significantly in recent weeks, raising questions about a ‘juicy’ ball

The Marlins are top ten in the league in on-base percentage and are the best team in MLB in stolen bases with 88.

This strategy may not be sexy, but it’s one of the main reasons the Marlins are within striking distance of the playoffs as we inch closer to the All-Star break.

Coming into the year, baseball fans were probably very aware of the first two branches of the Marlins’ rotation, as Sandy Alcántara and Eury Pérez both have reputations that precede them.

However, it was the emergence of Max Meyer that helped Miami get a much-needed boost to their pitching.

Meyer is 9-0 this season, and in June alone he has a 1.78 ERA with 33 strikeouts in five starts.

And I know I bemoaned the bullpen earlier this season, but this unit finally started to get back into shape, helping Miami hold on to some late leads.

When you throw all of that into a pot, you get a successful summer stew of winning baseball that has taken MLB by storm.

As a cynical Marlins fan, I’m just waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Will Miami be able to continue this momentum? Probably not, but it’s fun to watch while it happens.

And given how young this team is, it’s great to see them arrive sooner than expected, even if it’s only temporary.

Let’s hope that July is as good for the Marlins as June.
