Michael Kim made history with an exclamation point Friday at the 3M Open.
Kim, 33, was playing in just the 16th under-60 round (59) in PGA Tour history before the 18th hole. Kim’s wedge shot from the fairway on the par-5 18th rolled to the edge of the green, leaving him 24 feet away from making a birdie and writing his name into the history books.
Kim had one thing in mind when he went for the putt: Don’t leave it short.

“I tend to leave them short when it’s that hard and the last thing was just get there, but don’t leave them short,” Kim said.
He certainly didn’t leave it short as Kim buried him in the bottom of the cup and then threw a few huge punches in celebration.
Going into the final two holes, Kim knew what was at stake and wanted to take a chance on getting into the record books.
“I just thought, ‘Hey, this is what it is, it’s time to go into the history books and let’s go, let’s not try to fight our way through, let’s try to step up and make some really good shots,’” he said.

Kim made several runs throughout her round. From the third hole, he made five birdies in a row. He then made par on the eighth hole, but birdied three of the next four holes.
He finished his round with four consecutive birdies.
Kim was impeccable with his putter as eight of his 11 birdies were over 10 feet.
“When you hit a putt and it does exactly what you imagined before you hit it, it’s an incredible feeling. It was like that all day,” he said.

Kim’s historic day allowed him to take a three-shot lead over Ben Kohles, but Kim knows he still has a lot of golf left to play.
“Today was a great day, but I’m only halfway through, so I still need to concentrate for the weekend,” he said.
Kim’s 59 marks the fourth on tour since 2024. Jake Knapp was the last to do so in the first round of the 2025 Cognizant Classic. Jim Furyk holds the PGA Tour record with a score of 58 at the 2016 Travelers Championship.
