Netflix officially revealed Charlie Vs. the Chocolate Factoryhis new version of Roald Dahl’s iconic children’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The animated film, whose development is led by Sony Pictures Imageworks, aka the studio behind the giant Netflix Demon Hunters Kpop and the critically acclaimed film Spider Worms films, will be released exclusively on one of the world’s best streaming services in 2027.
The upcoming film will also put a deliciously sour spin on Dahl’s oft-adapted literary work – indeed, it will see the whimsical factory owner, Willy Wonka, clashing with a teenage version of Charlie, the child protagonist of Dahl’s bestselling novel.

As part of the announcement, Netflix revealed the first piece of artwork from the film. The image, which you’ve already seen above, shows an individual in silhouette holding a lollipop and looking out at the eponymous, color-drenched candy production factory.
Additionally, Netflix has confirmed the first two actors who will lend their voices to Willy Wonka and Charlie in its reimagined feature film.
Taika Waititi, who some readers will know from his work on Marvel films Thor: Ragnarok And Thor: Love and Thunderas well as other projects, including Jojo Rabbit, What we do in the shadowsAnd Our flag means deathwill voice the infamous chocolatier. In the meantime, Favorite‘s Kit Connor will take on the role of Charlie, the antagonist.
Here is the official synopsis of the story Charlie Vs. the Chocolate Factory which, contrary to its literary inspiration, will take place in modern-day London: “Willy Wonka spent the years following the Golden Ticket competition behind bars (not the chocolate kind) for the crime of turning a child into a blueberry.
“After serving his sentence, Wonka returns to his factory, determined to add some sweetness to a bitter world. But one thing stands in his way: teenager Charlie Paley and his friends. Facing expulsion, this new generation of rotten kids plots to break into the factory, grab a priceless Wonka Bar and save their home. But, like many before them who enter the fantasy world of the factory, these kids are going to have a little more than that. that they can chew…”

Jared Stern (The LEGO Batman Movie, green eggs and ham) and Elaine Bogan (Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, Untamed Spirit) are on board as directors of the film. Waititi will produce the film with the help of Academy Award winner Aron Warner (Shrek) and fellow producer Timothy Yoo (Return to the Outback, Green eggs and ham).
“Our directors, Jared and Elaine, have a bold vision that suits this new adventure while remaining sympathetic to the legacy, and I’m excited to play my part in bringing Willy Wonka to life in animated form,” Waititi said in a statement. “He’s so special to me, and the opportunity to voice such an iconic and eccentric candy genius – even if he’s a little mischievous at times – is extremely exciting.”
Having acquired the Roald Dahl company in 2021, Charlie Vs. the Chocolate Factory will be Netflix’s next adaptation based on the Dutch author’s bestselling work. So far, the entertainment giant has released live productions Matilda the musical by Roald Dahl And The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar new anthology, plus an animated version The idiots.
