- We have a new preview of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide
- This could be Samsung’s thinnest foldable yet
- A “wide” foldable iPhone from Apple is also expected this year
This could be the year the foldable phone market gets really interesting, and a new leak has given us what might be our best clue yet about the design of the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide – and it appears to be an incredibly thin phone.
Well-known tipster Sonny Dickson called the thinness “crazy” while showing a short clip of a dummy Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide unit. These physical mockups are made using information from the supply chain and give accessory manufacturers the ability to prepare their products in advance.
The leaker compares the thinness of the foldable to Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge – at least when unfolded – but responses to the original post are less positive, with adjectives like “weird” and “big” used to describe the handset.
According to information recently obtained by SamMobile, this “large” foldable will actually be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8, while the true successor to last year’s Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 will be called the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra.

If you’re wondering where this “wide” nomenclature comes from, it describes the shorter and wider aspect ratio of the phone’s screen, both open and closed. It’s a move away from the tall, narrow screens of today’s book-style foldables.
While the currently popular form factor – used on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, for example – means that foldables look more like standard phones when closed, when open they are rather boxy. With larger screens, foldables will look more like conventional tablets when opened (and be better for use cases like watching movies).
This change didn’t come out of nowhere: the long-rumored iPhone Fold is expected to use a wide form factor, with something like a 4:3 aspect ratio when opened. Samsung clearly wants to get ahead of Apple on this point, as Huawei has already done.
Everything indicates that the foldable iPhone will launch in September, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro, perhaps with new hinge technology that makes the fold almost invisible. For fans of foldable phones, there’s a lot to look forward to.
