Santos is facing a catastrophic financial crisis which could see top stars leave the club for absolutely nothing.
A major payment delay has reached breaking point, leaving the Brazilian giants vulnerable to legal action over their biggest assets.
Significant payment delays spark exit fears
Santos is currently battling a serious financial crisis which has left the club in a precarious position regarding its star-studded squad.
This was reported by UOL that the club owes three months of image rights to several key players, with the third tranche officially expiring on Monday.
This is a major breach of contract which could have lasting consequences on the future of the club.
In addition to the missing payment of image rights, which are considered part of a player’s salary under Brazilian law, the club failed to pay standard April salaries.
According to reports, Santos neglected to collect mandatory contributions to the FGTS (starting fund) and is behind on performance-related bonuses.
This combination of financial failures created a toxic atmosphere within the locker room at a critical time in the season.

Legal loopholes could facilitate free transfers
The seriousness of the situation cannot be overstated, as these continued delays provide a legal basis for players to seek an “indirect termination” of their contract in the employment tribunals.
Essentially, if the debts aren’t settled, superstars like Neymar and Memphis Depay would have the right to terminate their contracts and leave as free agents if they don’t get paid.
Even though no athlete has yet officially filed a complaint, the threat of a mass exodus looms over Vila Belmiro.
“We are still facing a very serious financial crisis, and everyone knows it,” President Marcelo Teixeira said. “We have two image rights payments that are late. They understand. It’s not normal, but I can guarantee that it doesn’t affect the athletes’ performance. Quite the contrary. They trust the management.”
Inappropriate timing for seizures
The technical team, led by manager Cuca, is said to be concerned about the impact of these off-field unrest on on-field performances.
With a crucial Copa do Brasil clash against Coritiba scheduled for Wednesday, the timing of the financial reveal is far from ideal.
Cuca himself, along with the team’s highest-paid employees, are among those currently awaiting their back payments, while lower-paid staff members have had their salaries paid in full.

Promise from President Teixeira
Following a recent victory against Red Bull Bragantino, tensions reached a fever pitch behind the scenes.
President Teixeira visited the locker room last Sunday and was greeted with direct requests from the players regarding unpaid debts.
The team has expressed growing dissatisfaction with the lack of transparency and delay in receiving what they are owed.
In response to the confrontation, Teixeira offered a verbal guarantee to the players and technical staff.
He promised to pay salaries from April and at least one month’s worth of image rights “as soon as possible.”
