- NordVPN just announced a huge network capacity upgrade
- Its global overall capacity has now exceeded 100 Tbps
- This should mean more stable performance, even during peak times.
NordVPN has just reached a major milestone, with overall global network capacity now exceeding 100 terabits per second (Tbps).
The idea behind the upgrade is simple: avoid one of the most annoying VPN problems before it starts. NordVPN claims that the network is designed with enough available capacity to keep connections stable even during peaks in demand.
In our testing, we’ve already considered NordVPN to be at the top of our list of best VPNs. The new update should bring peace of mind to users who tend to connect to the VPN during peak hours. Here’s how it works.

Prevent slowdowns before they happen
NordVPN claims its network now exceeds 100 Tbps overall capacity, spread across 211 locations in over 135 countries. This gives it more room to manage demand before users feel the strain.
The end goal is for users to never feel like the network is currently busy. Using a virtual server network (VPN) is sometimes associated with buffering, slow loading times, or disconnections, but adding network capacity should prevent this. Bottlenecks can still occur, but they are often caused by your local connection rather than the VPN itself.
The new update is only for margin. You won’t get faster speeds on an individual connection unless your connection is already thwarted by VPN network congestion. However, NordVPN already offers solid speeds, with a record speed of 1,249 Mbps in our extensive testing.
Why it matters
This is important because VPN slowdowns don’t appear out of nowhere. In fact, as NordVPN says, slowdowns are usually caused by insufficient capacity. That’s why the latest update is a way to avoid this, by adding additional margin on top of the already existing margin.
NordVPN reveals that its servers are running at about a third of their capacity by design, so it appears that potential slowdowns will be left in the rearview mirror with this new update.
Marijus Briedis, CTO at NordVPN, said: “Good infrastructure is the one you never notice. In practice, 100 Tbps means more headroom to absorb peaks in demand, leading to fewer bottlenecks when everyone connects at the same time, and faster, more reliable connections that users can actually experience.
You don’t need to do anything to activate the new update, although it doesn’t hurt to make sure your NordVPN app is running the latest version.
NordVPN believes that server quality is more important than quantity, and this update should go a long way to improving the former. That said, the VPN provider still has a robust network, and this was recently expanded with the addition of 211 new server locations around the world.
