  • Well produces 2,000 barrels of oil, 1.1 mmcfd of gas per day: OGDC.
  • The lower Goru Formation confirms the hydrocarbon reservoir potential.
  • Discovery opens a new window of exploration in Sanghar district.

Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDC), the country’s leading upstream energy company, has made a significant oil and gas discovery from its Bobi Deep-1 exploration well, located in Sanghar district of Sindh province.

The well successfully tested the Massive Sand interval of the Lower Goru formation and produced 2,000 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) as well as 1.1 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscfd) of gas through a cased hole drill stem test (DST), confirming the hydrocarbon potential of the reservoir, the company spokesperson said in a statement.

This achievement marks a major milestone for OGDC as the first hydrocarbon discovery in the Massive Sand area within the Bobi and Dhamraki mining concession.

Beyond the discovery itself, the success opened a new window of exploration in the region, de-risking similar prospects in the surrounding region and creating opportunities for future reserve additions and resource growth.

The discovery is particularly significant because the project had previously encountered complex underground challenges that led to the suspension of drilling operations.

Rather than abandon this perspective, the OGDC relied on Indigenous expertise and took an innovative approach to solving the problem.

A multidisciplinary team of geoscientists and engineers collaborated closely with the Center for Pure and Applied Geology at the University of Sindh, Jamshoro to study the phenomenon through advanced geophysical surveys, underground studies and field assessments.

The joint effort resulted in the development of a comprehensive geological and geophysical model, allowing OGDC to safely de-risk the prospect and resume operations.

Multiple engineering protection measures, specialist civil works and extensive technical assessments were undertaken before redeploying the drilling rig and successfully reaching the target depth.

The success story of the Bobi Deep-1 exploration well is a testament to OGDC’s indigenous innovation, technical excellence and industry-academia collaboration.

It demonstrates how local expertise can successfully solve complex operational challenges and unlock new hydrocarbon resources for the country.

The discovery is expected to help improve Pakistan’s oil and gas production, strengthen national energy security, reduce dependence on imported energy and increase the country’s hydrocarbon reserves.

The latest oil discovery at Bobi Deep-1 in Bobi and Dhamraki mining concession in Sanghar district of Sindh is expected to make a significant contribution to the company’s earnings, Arif Habib Limited said.

The AHL further highlighted that OGDC is the operator of Bobi Deep-1 and holds a 100% direct interest in the project.

He estimated that the new discovery is expected to contribute around Rs 1.67 per share per year to OGDC’s earnings.
