DC Studios has released the first official poster for its Lanterns TV show – and its catchphrase has created three major talking points among fans.
Published online yesterday (April 23), the work depicts its two protagonists – Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart and Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan – standing in the shadow of a giant lantern corps. ring. Nothing else has been publicly revealed about its plot or characters, but we were finally treated to actual footage from the live-action series via an official teaser in early March. You can read more about this and my theories about the upcoming program in my Lanterns article on trailer breakdown.
Why did the slogan from the first Lanterns poster spark three debates among fans?
But back to the poster and, more specifically, the possible intention behind its slogan. Indeed, its reveal has sparked three major discussions among fans, one of which centers around the potential demise of a major character.
Before we get into this spoiler-based chatter, let’s take a look at the other two conversations, starting with the fact that many were confused by his catchphrase.
The idea that “only one can wear the ring” has therefore baffled longtime readers who argue that, along with 7,199 other Green Lanterns – including another Earth-based one in Guy Gardner, whom we met in Superman And Peacemaker season 2 – that’s a totally misleading statement there.
However, as others have rightly pointed out, in this case the slogan only specifically refers to Jordan and Stewart. Indeed, what Lanterns“, the teaser tells us, Stewart will replace Jordan as Earth’s second Green Lantern. That means Jordan will have to abandon his Lantern Corps. To ring on Stewart, which is what the tagline is actually alluding to.
The second big talking point is more fun in nature.
Featuring catchphrases from the first three DCU films — Supermanplus the next Supergirl And clay face – all starting with the word “look”, fans had started joking that the motto of every DCU Chapter One production would also start with this word. Unfortunately for those hoping to turn this into a meme, Lanterns» The slogan puts an end to these wishes. Clearly, everyone has forgotten it Creature Commandosthe first DCU project to be released, did not carry a slogan with the word “look” at the beginning…
But I digress. As I mentioned, one of these online conversations centers around the possible disappearance of a key figure in Lanterns. So here is your one and only warning: potentially Major spoilers immediately follow, so don’t move past this point if you’re wary of what might happen.
As I mentioned, Lanterns makes no secret that Stewart will succeed Jordan. This could happen gracefully, with Jordan ultimately trusting Stewart to take his place.
On the other hand, Stewart could also become the keeper of Jordan’s ring if Jordan dies in Lanterns. Whether by sacrificing himself to save the day or being killed by the show’s Big Bad, Jordan shouldn’t rule out the possibility of shedding his mortal coil – especially since Stewart is set to appear in Superman following The man of tomorrowhe will get through it Lanterns alive.
Of course, it is entirely possible that Lanterns could throw us a major curveball and see Jordan become Parallax. It’s the supervillain alias he adopted in the ’90s Green Lantern comics after the destruction of Jordan’s hometown and his descent into madness. This would create a huge plot twist, especially if Stewart was forced to kill his mentor to save the day – a blindside moment that Redditors at LastCryptographer173 and AdmiralFoxythePirate believe could realistically happen.
Either way, I suspect DC’s marketing team didn’t expect Lanterns» to spark as many conversations as possible. But hey, any publicity is good publicity, so I’m sure the comic book giant will welcome any type of discussion to keep it in the spotlight.
