The Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA) has decided to introduce electric trolley service at major airports to facilitate the movement of passengers between key areas of the terminal premises.

According to PAA, the service will initially be launched at Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore and Multan airports.

A call for tenders has already been launched for the purchase of an electric cart service, the press release indicates.

The facility will allow passengers to travel from parking areas to concourse lobbies and back to parking areas from the terminal building.

Rabia Salmi, commercial director of the PAA, said passengers will be able to book electric carts through an app, adding that the initiative would make travel significantly easier, especially for the elderly.

The announcement comes days after Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired a high-level meeting aimed at developing a joint strategy to improve airport operations and public comfort.

In the meeting held on April 22, officials approved the installation of advanced control machines to improve the control system.

It was further agreed that common windows would be established, introducing a single control mechanism to reduce delays. Progress in installing electronic gates was also assessed.

“A unified screening system on a single scanner will save a lot of time,” Naqvi noted, adding that better coordination between institutions is essential to reduce crowding and long queues at airports.
