Last week, the government announced a substantial reduction in fuel prices, reducing the price of petrol by Rs 74 per liter and diesel by Rs 67 per liter amid a sharp fall in international crude oil prices and easing of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.

The aid package was announced by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, with the cuts aimed at passing on the benefits of lower global oil prices to consumers.

The price cuts follow the U.S.-Iran peace deal, facilitated by Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts, and the subsequent reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, a key global energy transit route that has helped ease concerns over oil supplies and contributed to a decline in international crude prices.

The government had also reduced the price of kerosene by Rs 48.29 per liter, bringing it down to Rs 233.90 per liter from Rs 282.19 per litre.

Petrol is mainly used by commuters traveling in small vehicles, rickshaws and two-wheelers. Rising fuel prices have a significant impact on the budgets of middle and lower class households, who rely on gasoline for their daily commute.

On the other hand, a significant portion of the transportation sector relies on high-speed diesel. Its price is considered inflationary as it is mainly used in heavy goods vehicles, trucks, buses, trains and agricultural machinery such as tractors, tube wells and threshers.
