Australia and Turkey will face off in their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Sunday, June 14, 2026, at BC Place Vancouver on FS1.
This is Australia’s sixth consecutive appearance at the World Cup. In the last five matches, they have been eliminated three times in the group stage and twice in the round of 16, including at the 2022 tournament in Qatar where they lost to eventual champions Argentina.
Australia finished second to Japan in the Asian qualifiers, although they did not lose to Samurai Blue in either encounter. Their only defeat in the group stage came against Bahrain.
The Socceroos enter the tournament on the back of a 1-1 draw with Switzerland and a 1-0 defeat to Mexico in two World Cup warm-up friendlies.
On the other hand, this is Turkey’s first participation in the World Cup in 24 years, having last qualified in 2002 when they won the bronze medal.
Turkey booked their place at the 2026 World Cup after finishing second to Spain in UEFA Group E and then qualified for the UEFA playoffs. They sealed their qualification with a 1-0 victory over Kosovo in the final.
Turkey continued their momentum from the finals, recently winning two friendlies against North Macedonia and Venezuela by a combined score of 5-2.
