The Netherlands and Japan will open their Group F campaigns at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in what is widely considered one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage.
The match will take place on June 14, 2026 at Dallas Stadium on FOX.
This opening heavyweight match is only the second World Cup meeting between these teams, with the Netherlands having claimed a 1-0 victory in their previous clash in 2010.
After missing out on the 2018 World Cup, the Netherlands reaffirmed their status as a legitimate contender, highlighted by a 2022 quarter-final appearance in Qatar before losing to Argentina (the eventual champions) in a heartbreaking penalty shootout.
The Oranje secured their place at the 2026 World Cup by winning UEFA Group G, securing direct qualification without the need for a playoff. The team remained undefeated, finishing with 20 points and closed their campaign with a 4–0 victory over Lithuania to seal first place.
Meanwhile, Japan became the first team outside the host nation to secure a place at the 2026 World Cup, finishing first in their group during Asian qualifying.
Japan has qualified for eight consecutive FIFA World Cups (1998-2026), cementing its place among Asia’s most consistent national teams. Even if their best result remains an appearance in the round of 16, the country’s steady rise positions them as a dangerous team, capable of finally qualifying for their very first quarter-final and beyond.
The Samurai Blue enter the tournament as winners of six consecutive international matches, including major victories over Brazil and England during that period.

The Netherlands against. Japan Prediction, choice
From FOX Sports Research:
- This may be the toughest choice over the first four days of the tournament, as both teams bring a lot of experience and talent. However, Japan will be without Kaoru Mitoma and Wataru Endō due to injuries, arguably the team’s two best players. The Netherlands boasts Frenkie de Jong, Denzel Dumfries, Virgil van Dijk, Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo, to name a few. Back the Dutch to win in a close game.
