As a monarch, King Charles holds many prestigious honors and has been immortalized in history in various art forms and collectibles.
For the first time in centuries, a queen consort is being honored after a new ‘Queen Camilla’ coin was approved by the Royal Mint. This is a surprising twist since only the reigning monarch of the time appears on the coin rather than his wives.
Although not a historic first, it will be the first British coin to recognize the Queen Consort since the Tudors.
Elizabeth II had wanted her successor, Charles III, to have Camilla hold the title of queen consort and not that of “queen”. However, this was one of the first changes Charles made by removing the “Consort” from Camilla’s honorifics when speaking in public.
The new coin will celebrate 500 years of the Crown and feature a Tudor rose on one side, then the crowned royal figures of King Charles and Queen Camilla on the other side.
The design is inspired by King Henry VIII, who featured the initials of his first three wives on Crown coins.
A coin expert called “Christopher Collects” said that as collectors, they are always looking for coins that “tell a story beyond their face value.”
“This version combines royal history, Tudor inspiration and a truly rare constitutional moment.”
