Queen Margrethe of Denmark, 86, was taken to hospital following a health emergency, a royal court spokesperson confirmed.
Sharing an update on the Danish royal’s health, the rep said in a statement that she was being treated for tonsillitis at Rigshospitalet Hospital and was “tired” and in “good spirits.”
According to the statement, the queen, who abdicated in 2024 and passed the throne to her eldest son Frederik, will remain under observation over the weekend.
The former sovereign ruled the Scandinavian country for 52 years before handing over the throne to her eldest son, Frederik, in January 2024.
Margrethe has faced many health problems in recent years. The queen had already been hospitalized last year.
In 2025, Queen Margarethe was admitted to hospital for an undisclosed illness. At the time, the royal household said she had been admitted to Rigshospitalet for “observation as a precautionary measure”.
After being admitted on May 8, Queen Margrethe returned to Fredensborg Palace on May 10 after leaving the hospital.
Queen Margarethe has had a busy royal schedule of late, with her latest royal outing alongside her daughter-in-law Queen Mary forcing the former monarch to exchange a stern word with the reigning queen.
The royal family, also including Mary’s husband King Frederik and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, were seen outside Fredensborg Palace to attend a Royal Life Guards Music Corps concert for Margrethe’s 86th birthday.
