Cincinnati Reds center fielder Dane Myers had to be carted off the field after a play that could be a candidate for “catch of the year” turned scary after crashing into the fence in Milwaukee Monday night.

Milwaukee Brewers veteran Andrew Vaughn smashed a fly ball to center field in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Myers took a big leap as he began tracking the ball.

As he sprinted toward the gap, Myers raised his hand and made an acrobatic catch, but he lost his balance and was too close to the wall when he collided with the fence at full speed. It was a miracle he even retained the ball considering the collision, but it clearly took its toll.

Myers, writhing in pain on the warning track, was hunched over when his fellow outfielders came to tend to him, while the Reds’ practice squad began sprinting onto the field.

Myers held his right shoulder, although his collision was head-on with the fence. The coaches looked at Myers for a while, while the crowd remained silent in hopes that he would somehow pull through.

Eventually a cart came out and Myers stood up with a little help as the crowd applauded him for sacrificing his body for his team. TJ Friedl eventually took his place in the center of the field.

Myers was taken to a local hospital in Milwaukee for further testing, and it was a good sign that initial X-rays came back negative, according to manager Terry Francona after the Reds’ 5-3 loss to the Brewers. Francona would not give details about what illness Myers might be suffering from.

Myers, 30, a native of Columbus, Texas, is in his first season with the Reds, where he plays as a bench outfielder.

He played in 63 games this season, owning a .256/.358/.385 slash line with a .742 OPS, three home runs and 14 RBIs in 117 at-bats.

Prior to his time in Cincinnati, Myers made his big league debut with the Miami Marlins in 2023, playing in 22 games that year and hitting .269 over 67 at-bats. He spent the next two seasons with the Marlins, although his longest MLB tenure came in 2025 when he played in 106 games and hit .235/.291/.326 with six home runs and 31 RBIs with Miami.

Unfortunately for the Reds, they ultimately failed to get Myers the win. Joey Ortiz’s two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning broke a then-3-3 tie in this NL Central contest, which capped a comeback that also saw Brice Turang, who played for Team USA in the World Baseball Classic, smash a solo home run to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh.
