Reese Witherspoon has sparked a heated debate after encouraging her followers to embrace artificial intelligence, warning that those who don’t keep pace with technology risk being left behind.
In a video shared yesterday on Instagram, the Oscar-winning actress and producer revealed that a recent conversation with her book club acted as a wake-up call.
Out of ten women, only three used AI, and only one felt confident using it correctly.
Witherspoon argued that if 70% of the group didn’t keep up, technology could quickly “overtake” them, urging her audience to learn the basics to make their daily lives easier and better.
THE Morning show The star insisted that “it’s time” people got to grips with technology, pointing out that children already use these tools every day.
Although the video has been viewed more than three million times and received support from famous friends like Kerry Washington and high-profile agent Maha Dakhil, it also faced significant backlash.
Some critics have taken to social media to suggest that Witherspoon may have financial motivations for her stance, with one Threads user claiming she is “heavily financially invested in AI” and ignoring the fact that the technology “steals and profits from the work of actual artists.”
Environmental concerns also dominated reactions, with commenters urging the actress to learn about the high power consumption of data centers and their impact on local communities.
Journalist Christina Binkley weighed in on Threads, noting that just because a trend is widespread doesn’t mean it’s “a good or smart thing to do.”
The backlash is especially strong given Witherspoon’s reputation as an advocate for authors through her popular book club.
Many have pointed out the irony of his support for AI, given the numerous lawsuits filed by writers who accuse tech companies of using their books without permission to train their systems.
As a prolific producer known for bringing numerous literary works to the screen, Witherspoon’s pro-AI stance has left some fans conflicted.
Critics say the technology she promotes is the same technology that currently threatens the livelihoods of the very creators she has supported for years.
While Witherspoon maintains that having “a little understanding” is essential for modern life, the divided responses to her video highlight a growing tension between those who are eager to adopt new tools and those who worry about the ethical and environmental costs of doing so.
