Folding phones can promise a pocket tablet experience, but there is a unique difference between the large interior screen of a foldable and an appropriate slate: the fold. This is a distraction, but the Samsung display may finally repair it with a design that we could see adopted by the Galaxy Z Fold 7.
In the middle of the interior screen of a folding phone – along the hinge where it folds – is a fold that you can see and feel on all existing consumption models. Now at the MWC 2025 Samsung Display (the arm that works on television and phone screen panels, and is a different entity from Samsung Electronics, which actually makes televisions, phones and other gadgets) presented a foldable without breed.
Some models have already taken measures in the right direction. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 has a much less visible fold than the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold, and in some lights, you cannot see it at all, and others that followed – like the Oppo Find N5 – made the fold even less distracting. But no phone has eliminated the fold so far.
The images of the new folding screen of Samsung Display (via Android Central) show no visible folds from several viewing angles, the improvements being highlighted by the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 clearly struck next to the new technology on the Samsung stand.
This design generates a lot of excitement along the foldable fans – in particular in the light of some additional details which I want to discuss below – but it should be noted that although Samsung displays and the electronics can be close collaborators, they are distinct, and although the display without pawn is ready to see daylight, it may not have been ready when the Z Fold 7 (which is due to the end of July) was designed.
There is therefore a chance that this new display will be retained until next year Galaxy Z Fold 8 – and potentially even more according to the manufacturing challenges that we do not know or the cost of the screen. We will not know before the launch of the Z Fold 7 later this year, but beyond the lack of fold, there are a few other design details which mean that all my fingers have crossed for this screen to make its debut in the foldables in 2025 of Samsung.
More than a screen without tightening
The first is a change of selfie camera for the interior screen. Currently, the Galaxy Z Fold range uses a Vivaneau under display, but the new technology shows us a conventional hole punch design. The under-game camera can better blend when a picture is full screen, but it is never completely invisible and undergoes a serious drop in quality compared to typical selfie cams.
The Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold has a hole punch and frankly I prefer this design by far, so I am excited to see a Galaxy Z Fold 7 (or 8) with a punch.
The other change is that the phone without tightening seems to be a larger screen than the Z Fold 6 – with two halves that look more like a standard phone form. A larger interior screen is never a bad thing, but it means that we will also have a larger outdoor screen. The outdoor screen on the fold Z 6 feels cramped, and its strange aspect ratio can cause problems with certain applications, unlike the Google Pixel 9 Pro Fold and others which offer a more standard outdoor screen.
This new pawn without a pawn seems ready to bring the next Samsung online devices with its rivals in terms of size.
It should be noted that its own could be the style that the display that Samsung is to be demonstrated, and Samsung Electronics could make its screen foldable without breed more closely corresponding to the existing shape and design of its existing foldables, but for my hope, this indicates a major reshuffle for the Galaxy Z Fold 7, 8 or all that Samsung Folding level so necessary for all fronts.
