ISLAMABAD:

The Supreme Court Registrar’s Office refused to consider lawyer Imaan Mazari’s petition seeking suspension of her sentence in a case related to anti-state posts on social media, raising objections against it.

The human rights lawyer had moved the apex court after the Islamabad High Court (IHC) failed to list her plea for suspension of her 17-year sentence.

Mazari filed the petition through renowned lawyer Faisal Siddiqi.

The motion stated that despite her lawyer’s vehement request to stay the trial court’s judgment, the IHC only issued notices on the stay request on February 19 and did not suspend the petitioner’s sentence.

It is learned that the SC Registrar’s office has raised four objections to the petition. He said the power of attorney was not properly executed; the name, registration and mobile number of the lawyer are not available and the subject, prayer, clause and certificate are not drawn properly.

However, the applicant’s lawyer will soon submit an application to overturn the registrar’s objections. If the petition is assigned a number, a three-judge committee comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Yahya Afridi, Justice Munib Akhtar and Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhail will decide whether the case should be listed.
