LAHORE: The Punjab government has imposed Section 144 around airports and Pakistan Air Force bases across the province, the provincial interior ministry said on Thursday.

According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Interior dated May 19, certain activities, including searching for pigeons, using laser lights and throwing meat, [sadqa] for consumption of carnivorous birds around air bases and airports – may “present a serious risk to flight operations and aviation assets”.

The notification added that there were sufficient grounds to proceed under Section 144 as “immediate prevention of disturbance of public peace, security of lives and public property and tranquility”.

“Birds are attracted to meat and dirt, which poses serious dangers for aircraft and passengers. Likewise, the use of laser lights by shops, squares and citizens within the airport boundaries also affects flight operations, which is why the ban was imposed,” the Interior Ministry wrote on X.

The restrictions will remain in force across Punjab for 30 days, the notification said. The orders will also apply within the boundaries of commercial airports operating throughout the province.

According to the notification, the Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs — under Section 144(6) of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) — has banned activities in and around the funnel zone of all PAF bases and commercial airports in the province within a radius of 13 km with immediate effect.
