Cape Verde is a small island nation located off the coast of Africa. Its population is just over 524,800 and every one of them must have been jubilant after their football team’s FIFA World Cup result against Spain.

Spain are one of the favorites to win this year’s World Cup, but picked up just one point from their match against Cape Verde. The two teams found themselves tied 0-0 on Monday in one of the biggest shocks of the tournament so far.

Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha, 40, kept Spain at bay in the first half despite an avalanche of shots. Spain managed seven shots on goal, compared to just one for Cape Verde, but never managed to find the back of the net.

Mikel Oyarzabal made five of seven shots.

Spanish sensation Lamine Yamal started the match from the bench, but even he couldn’t find the shot to get past Cape Verde.

Both teams will come away with a point each in the Group H match. This makes the road even tougher for Spain as they await the result of the Saudi Arabia-Uruguay match later on Monday.

Cape Verde is making its first participation in the World Cup. The nation was part of Portugal at the start of the World Cup. Nor did she immediately become a member of FIFA.

The country began fighting for a World Cup appearance in 2002. It only qualified for the tournament this year, as the field expanded to 48 nations.

Cape Verde is ranked 67th among FIFA members.

Spain won the World Cup in 2010 when the tournament was held in South Africa. In the last two tournaments, the nation has only reached the round of 16.
