DC fans have expressed confusion and concern over the larger plan for the DC Universe (DCU) amid reports that another film led by a Batman villain would take priority over one starring The Dark Knight.
With Supergirl After suffering a calamitous theatrical debut, grossing a paltry $68 million worldwide, all eyes are on DC Studios co-heads James Gunn and Peter Safran to see if they’ll make any drastic changes to their DCU Chapter One lineup.
Anyone hoping to see or hear that a Batman and/or Wonder Woman film will be fast-tracked should temper their expectations, however. Indeed, according to The Wrap, the next film which will enter production after The man of tomorrowaka sequel to last year’s Superman film, will be… one featuring Batman’s enemies, Bane and Deathstroke. Yes, really.
Wrap’s sources aren’t the only ones who have heard that this movie could soon become a reality. Indeed, X/Twitter user and reliable industry insider Apocalyptic Horseman has also indicated that a Bane-and-DeathStroke film is shaping up to be the Warner Bros. subsidiary’s next big-screen project.
This is not the first time that rumors about such a film have circulated online. In May, Deadline claimed that the project was not only in its early stages, but that Greg Mottola (Super bad, Peacemaker) had been asked to direct it.
If MM. Gunn and Safran are officially greenlighting a Bane and Deathstroke film, this will be the third to feature characters associated with Batman before the Caped Crusader even gets a standalone film.
A project starring Clayface, Batman’s shapeshifting nemesis, which hits theaters in October, is the first of this trio. Meanwhile, an animated puppet film currently titled Dynamic duo will feature the DCU versions of Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, aka individuals who take on the role of Batman’s iconic sidekick Robin in DC Comics.

Amid the maelstrom of discourse that has enveloped DC Studios and Supergirl Since the latter’s disastrous launch, fans have been wondering if Gunn and Safran will go back to the drawing board and rework their entire release strategy.
It appears, however, that they are remaining steadfast in their current approach to their burgeoning film franchise – and it has certainly annoyed certain sections of the fanbase.
Indeed, in numerous threads on r/DCULeaks and r/DC_Cinematic, people have expressed confusion and frustration with the duo focusing their efforts on developing projects that won’t feature DC Comics’ most famous and popular characters.
Some believe that it is now more important than ever to introduce and establish Batman and Wonder Woman in the DCU, and that if it doesn’t, DC Studios will face an uphill battle attracting newcomers to its burgeoning universe. Meanwhile, others say DC Studios should learn from Sony’s on-hiatus Spider-Man Universe (SSU), which prioritized stories centered around members of the titular webslinger’s rogues gallery and, despite performing well initially, ultimately paid the price amid increasingly negative reviews and declining box office returns.
Then there’s the small matter of the potential Warner Bros. buyout. Pictures by Paramount Skydance. If this comes to fruition, some believe the DCU could be scrapped before it is truly established, especially if clay face underperform later this year and Lanternswhich is coming to HBO Max in August, is also not performing as well as expected. The pressure would then certainly be strong The man of tomorrow to save the day and ensure the survival of the DCU, for however long that may last.
