Taylor Swift Admits Swifties Can Go Too Far: ‘There’s Nothing I Can Do’

Taylor Swift slams some Swifties who treat her songs like a ‘paternity test’

Taylor Swift criticizes her fans for sometimes going too far.

While dissecting his songwriting process in a new interview with The New York Times released on Tuesday (April 28), the pop superstar explained that she shares a few traditions with her fans when it comes to her songs. But sometimes they can cross a line.

“There are so many [the traditions] now, which is great, but there are corners of my fan base that are going to take things to a really extreme place,” Swift said, noting that “there’s nothing I can do about it.”

The multiple Grammy Award winner then shared her thoughts on fans who like to do “detective work” and find out who a certain song is about.

“What can be a little weird for me is when people act like it’s some kind of paternity test,” she said. “Because I’m like, ‘This guy didn’t write the song, I did.’

However, Swift acknowledged that it just comes with the territory. “You have to hold on to your perception of your art and your relationship with it,” she emphasized, noting that once she releases a song, she also releases her expectations. “I hope you like it. And if you don’t like it, I hope you like it in five years. And if you never like it, then I was doing it for myself anyway.”
