Although Spain’s 1-0 victory over Argentina in extra time closed out the 2026 FIFA World Cup, the biggest attractions of the tournament took place just days before.
Cloudflare has released its own analytics, tracking HTTP traffic, DNS, and security trends across a network spanning more than 330 points of presence in more than 120 countries in June and July 2026.
While the analysis confirms some widely held assumptions about the World Cup, it also demolishes others, as it reveals that it was not the final that most moved the Internet, but a quarter-final involving Argentina.

According to Cloudflare data, the Argentina vs Switzerland quarter-final dominated all other matches with a margin factor of around 1.26, while the final ranked eighth.
Unsurprisingly, reigning champions Argentina also moved the most traffic during their journey, at 1.18x that of a typical country, followed by France at 1.16x.
Matches played between midnight and 8 a.m. local time produced the largest gaps, in some cases more than doubling normal traffic. The reason is simple: These are times when almost no one is online, so fans staying up or waking up early to watch represent a large proportional variation.
Matches taking place between 9 a.m. and mid-afternoon were barely recorded, as spectators would have been online anyway. Early evening kickoffs produced a smaller secondary impact, more visible on weekdays, because games kept people connected during hours when usage would normally decline.
Bosnia and Herzegovina illustrates both aspects of this situation. When the national team played at 2 a.m. local time, traffic at the points more than doubled. When they played in the evening, traffic dropped to about 70% of usual levels, people put down their devices and just watched.
The clearest demonstration came in Brazil’s 2-1 victory over Japan in the round of 16 on June 29. The same 90 minutes took place during ordinary waking hours in Brazil and in the middle of the night in Tokyo. Japanese traffic reached roughly double normal levels; Brazilian traffic remained around a quarter below normal. Two almost parallel curves, opposite sides of the baseline, same match.
Grouping countries by the shape of their matchday traffic curves produced three groups, and the breakdown reveals something about how people actually watch.
The largest group (44 countries across 101 matches) saw traffic spike during halftime and hydration breaks, the familiar pattern of everyone reaching for their phones as soon as play stops. A smaller group of eight countries spread over 18 matches did just the opposite, with traffic dropping during those same breaks.
The explanation turned out to be streaming. This second group (Algeria, Tunisia, Jordan, Egypt and the Democratic Republic of Congo) had mixed traffic dominated by multimedia and streaming requests, meaning a large portion of viewers were watching the match online rather than on TV.
Notably, hydration breaks had little effect in the streaming cluster but a clear effect elsewhere. Cloudflare’s reading is that a viewer won’t close a stream for a three-minute cool-down break, but for a fifteen-minute interval. However, in the majority of countries, even these three minutes were enough to cause a visible traffic disruption: Croatia and Bosnia and Herzegovina were the most affected.
Requests to gaming industry sites increased overall from the opening game. The most interesting change was structural. Before the tournament, betting traffic followed a pronounced weekly rhythm; thereafter, it flattened out to a near-constant profile, a result, Cloudflare suggests, of matches taking place with near-daily regularity for a month.
At the scale Cloudflare operates, it is truly difficult for a single event to leave a visible mark on overall global traffic. The fact that the 2026 World Cup managed to achieve this is the clearest measure of the tournament’s importance to internet users.
