- The long term Heroes of power and magic the series returns in the first new entry in over a decade
- Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is a prequel led by a new developer
- “I feel like it’s one of those generational games,” said the studio’s community manager.
THE Heroes of power and magic the series has been dormant for over a decade, with the last main entry, Heroes of might and magic 5dropping back in 2015. Now it’s coming back – led by indie developer Unfrozen and published by both strategy titan Hooded Horse and franchise owner Ubisoft.
The revival has already made a splash, climbing the charts to become the tenth most desired title on PC gaming platform Steam after launching an incredibly popular free demo in October 2025. Things are looking promising – but it’s not easy taking the reins of such a long-running and legendary franchise, especially with such an enduring fanbase.
“I feel like it’s one of those generational games,” community manager Bart Podress-Leszek said in a recent interview with TechRadar Gaming. “Three decades ago he came into the market and basically created this whole genre around him.”

He highlighted the many spiritual successors, including recent versions like Songs of conquest And Heroes of science and fictionbut argued that while there have been “various successes”, there is still “nothing” comparable to what “the original series did”.
He added that the franchise is “its own thing” compared to other strategy titles and described it as a “mother game” from which “everything else flows.” He pointed out people like Civilization And Call of Duty as similar examples, claiming that they truly shaped their respective genres.
Podress-Leszek also spoke about the weight of fans’ high expectations. “It’s not just a game that you develop. It’s a multi-generational title that has gone through millions and millions of iterations and changes between all the games that have been made,” he said. “And even those who were not released.”
“You look [a series with] many fans who have very diverse expectations, depending on which game they have played the most. And you have to deal with all of this. »
According to the developer, the team also made sure to respect previous titles. “There’s 30 years of legacy, if you include RPGs it’s 40 years,” he said. This led to the decision to create a prequel, with events taking place on the continent of Jadame, previously featured in the role-playing game (RPG). Might and Magic 8: Day of the Destroyer.
“We have a whole new realm of possibilities because we’re not encroaching on what’s already been done, but rather creating something that’s integrated with that,” he continued. “We have great creative freedom.”
Heroes of Might and Magic: Olden Era is expected to launch into Early Access on April 30, 2026.
