Widows Bay Star Hamish Linklater has revealed he’s just as confused as the rest of us about what’s happening in the hot new Apple TV show.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar following the horror-comedy’s recent double bill, Linklater explained everything he knows about the series’ overarching mystery. He also discussed the fate of his character, Richard Warren, and whether he could reprise his latest TV role if the Matthew Rhys-led series is renewed for another season.

If you’ve seen the latest Apple TV Original entries – “Our Story” and “Seasickness” – you already know that Warren doesn’t make it to the end credits of Episode 7.
Having lived for over 300 years – although buried alive following the events described in Episode 6 – thanks to the blood pact he made with the demonic entity that dwells on the island, Warren meets his maker in the final act of Episode 7.
Indeed, his long-awaited death comes after the island’s mayor, Tom Loftis, and one of its most superstitious inhabitants, Wyck, take the zombified Warren beyond the confines of the island and, subsequently, the reach of the supernatural entity. Long story short – and in Linklater’s own words – Warren ultimately becomes “just a big pile of dust in a [coffin-shaped] box.”
Despite Warren’s disappearance, Linklater isn’t entirely convinced that this is the last we’ll see of Widow’s Bay’s first so-called Lord Island Protector. Of course, a potential return will largely depend on Apple greenlighting another season — something Linklater spoke to series creator Katie Dippold about.
“I talked to him about what the future could be,” Linklater said before adding dryly: “[But] she didn’t answer me about what the future of the series will be.
“I guess this is the end of his life [Warren’s] history. But you know, I did it [FX TV show] Legion and its creators seemed to kill me in the first episode, and they were clearly out of story ideas, so they brought me back to life. Maybe Katie will run out of story ideas too and will have to bring me back!”
As for the overall mystery of the series, Linklater is like every other fan of Widows Bay in that he has little to no idea where things will go in the final three episodes of this season, and what Dippold’s big plan is if Apple renews him for one or more seasons. This is despite his obvious involvement in the series and the small but extremely significant role that Warren plays in the story of the titular island.
“I don’t understand what’s happening,” he added wryly. “Katie told me what I personally needed to know, but I haven’t understood anything yet. But she’s an incredible storyteller, and Matthew Rhys is brilliantly crazy, so maybe I don’t need to fully understand what’s going on to appreciate it.”
Episodes 1-7 of Widow’s Bay are now available on Apple TV, aka one of best streaming services. New chapters air weekly until the season 1 finale on June 17.
