If you want a smart video doorbell but don’t have anywhere to install one – or permission from your landlord to make permanent modifications – then the new EP4 door peephole from EZVIZ seems like a great alternative. This is a smart video camera that offers all the key features of the best video doorbells, but instead of screwing it into the door, frame or wall, you simply replace the door’s existing peephole.
Because it’s wireless and requires no additional mounting, if you move elsewhere in the future, you can simply remove it and put the original peephole back in place.
There’s another key advantage here: the EP4 supports local storage. If, like me, you’re trying to avoid signing up for yet another subscription service, this is a big plus.
EZVIZ EP4 Wireless Door Peephole: What it does, how much it costs and where to get it
The EZVIZ EP4 consists of two sections: the camera and the viewing screen. The camera is designed to replace peepholes with a diameter between 14mm and 50mm, so it should fit most existing peephole doors, and it has a 7,100mAh rechargeable battery, so you’re not going to be charging it every few weeks. My video doorbell battery is 5,000 mAh and I usually get about two months out of it on a fairly busy street.
The camera streams 4K video to the portable viewer, which has a 5.5-inch touchscreen. There’s a live view and two-way talk mode, AI-powered facial recognition, human shape detection, and infrared detection, and you can customize the detection sensitivity so it doesn’t alert you to irrelevant passersby. Local storage is via a microSD card, with support for cards up to 512GB.
The camera has a wide 155-160 degree field of view with automatic distortion correction so your visitors don’t look like they’re auditioning to be in an emo band’s video. There’s no night vision here, although that shouldn’t be a problem for interior doors in apartment buildings and similar spaces.
EZVIZ sells via Amazon and the EP4 is available now at the RRP of £159.99 from Amazon UK.
In Europe, the recommended price is €249 but I already see it reduced to €189. Pricing and availability for the United States and Australia have not yet been announced.
