Kolkata: India has used the deployment of troops to repress the deadly demonstrations that broke out in the state of Western Bengal on the legislation to change the management of properties belonging to Muslims.

Police pulled tear gas over the thousands of demonstrators who gathered on Friday in the State Murshidabad district. Three people, including a child, were killed, police said AFP SATURDAY.

“So far, 118 people have been arrested in the context of violence,” said Jawed Shamim, a senior state police official, adding that at least 15 police officers had been injured.

The high court of the state ordered the federal troops to deploy.

The Waqf amendment bill which sparked the demonstrations was adopted earlier this month after a heated debate.

There are about two dozen WAQF advice across India, with some 900,000 acres, a real estate empire of several billion dollars which makes it one of the largest landowners alongside railways and defense forces.

The Minister of Parliamentary Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, who tabled the bill on Wednesday, said that she would check corruption and poor management.

Amit Shah, the Minister of the Interior and a close assistant of Modi, said that changes will help “catch people who praise properties” for individual gains. “This money, which could be used to help the development of minorities, is stolen,” he said.

The non-Muslims, which will be included in the councils within the framework of the new bill, will only be involved in “administrative questions”, said Shah. However, the opposition parties accuse the government of pushing the “polarizing policy” to the detriment of the Muslim minority of India of 200 million.

According to the Hindu Nationalist Government in power, it will strengthen transparency around land management by holding powerful Waqf advice, which control the properties offered by Muslim benefits.

But the opposition called the polarizing “attack” bill against the Muslim minority of India. They accused the party of Prime Minister Narendra Mod the Bharatiya Janata (BJP) party of having tried to win the favor of its right -wing Hindu base.

After the adoption of the bill, Modi called it a “moment of the watershed”.

The leader of the Opposition Congress Party, Rahul Gandhi, said that the bill was addressed “to Muslims today, but establishes a precedent to target other communities in the future”.

The decade of Modi as Prime Minister saw him cultivate an image as an aggressive champion of the majority Hindu Faith of the country.

His government revoked the constitutional autonomy of India in India in the field of Muslim majority illegally occupied the Jammu and the cashmere and supported the construction of a temple for patterns where a mosque was held for centuries before being demolished by the Hindu extremists in 1992.
