The Boston Red Sox’s cleaning house, where manager Alex Cora and five other members of the coaching staff were fired amid a poor start to the 2026 MLB season, has a veteran in the clubhouse.
While it’s not necessarily Cora’s firing in general, shortstop Trevor Story reportedly didn’t like the organization’s response to the vast change with much of the season remaining.
“Trevor Story said Red Sox bosses’ explanation this morning wasn’t enough and that he intends to have more conversations with [general manager] Craig Breslow today,” tweeted Tim Healey of the Boston Globe.

Additionally, Story said, “The true direction of the franchise remains unclear.
“If this shows us anything, it’s that we’re here to play baseball, and that’s it. We don’t make decisions. We have no input on that,” Story added.

Breslow spoke to reporters after the layoffs, alongside Red Sox Chairman and CEO Sam Kennedy, before continuing their series with the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday.
“By taking action today, that gives us 135 games ahead of us, so we have almost a full season to take advantage of this fresh start and ultimately compete for a deep division and playoffs in the way we talked about, imagined and believed before spring training,” Breslow said, according to ESPN, sounding optimistic despite his team sitting 10-17 on Sunday.
The team parted ways with Cora, hitting coach Pete Fatse, third base coach Kyle Hudson, bench coach Ramón Vázquez, assistant hitting coach Dillon Lawson and major league hitting strategy coach Joe Cronin.

Jason Varitek, the World Series-winning catcher with the Red Sox during his playing days, was also reassigned to an unspecified role within the organization. He will no longer be the coach of game planning and run prevention.
Chad Tracy, who managed Triple-A Worcester, now takes over as interim manager of the Red Sox.
“We believe in the group of players that we have in the clubhouse, down the hall, and we think that new direction is warranted, new voices and something that allows us to make a fresh start,” Breslow added.
While trying to keep the outlook sunny, Story’s outlook is cloudy, at least for now, as Boston continues its season on a road they hadn’t planned for the 2026 campaign.

Cora’s firing came after the Red Sox beat the Orioles, 17-1, on Saturday afternoon – his biggest win of the season.
During his eight years as manager of the Red Sox, Cora achieved a record of 620-541, while helping the team win a World Series title in his first season in 2018.
