- Triangle unveils the beautiful new Solstice range
- Solstice 8 floorstanders, Solstice 3 bookshelf speaker and C3 center channel
- A brand new custom tweeter is their main selling point
Did you think the summer solstice was June 21? Maybe, but Triangle The solstice apparently falls a day later. Indeed, the French audio brand Triangle has unveiled its latest family of audio products called, you guessed it, the Solstice.
This new family consists of three major versions. First of all, there are the Solstice 8 floor-standing speakers, which are joined, to save space, by the Solstice 3 bookshelf speakers, and the family is completed by the C3 center channel. Pictured above you see Solstice 8.
I’ve reported a few columns at this point, and the Triangle Solstice 8’s asking price seems a bit lower than normal cost. A pair will sell for $2,799 / £1,999 (around AU$4,000), which naturally isn’t cheap, but it’s still cheap.uh. Last week I talked about another pair of Focal speakers that cost 87.5 times the Solstice 8, so you know, there you go…
Bookshelf speakers are naturally less expensive. You can buy the Solstice 3 for $1,349 / £999 (around AU$2,000) per pair, and the C3 costs $750 / £579 (around AU$1,080), although the standard price for these types of products can be much lower than floor stands.
Triangle’s Solstice range will go on sale later in June, through local hi-fi retailers that the brand works with.
Needs more Triangle
It appears that one of the main selling points of the new Triangle Solstice range is the horn tweeter found in each of the three products, designed specifically for the range. It is arc-shaped, made from die-cast aluminum and designed to reduce resonance.
This is a refreshing change because most of the time when I talk about new speakers it feels like the focus is on the mids or low end. I’ve written about all sorts of woofer technology and had my socks blown in all sorts of directions from thumping bass during listening demonstrations. Putting the high end as the focal point seems unusual today.
The tweeter is joined by 16 cm midranges; two in the C3, one in the 3, and none in the 8 (this also includes 16mm drivers, but there is a midrange and two woofers). These are made from cellulose pulp, to provide a neutral sound profile.
The Solstice 3 and C3 both feature single terminals for connection, while the Solstice 8 has a dual terminal, with bi-wiring and bi-amplification to avoid any mixed signals or distortion.
Each member of the Solstice range is available in teak, birch, black ash or… white. The latter is not white-looking wood (like ash, perhaps), it is just… white. They may not be the most unique speakers I’ve ever seen, but the reinforced cabinet with stacked drivers is a proven design – and after all, it’s the sound that counts.
