- Actress Kate O’Flynn says it took two nights to film, but it took a physical toll on her
Widows Bay Star Kate O’Flynn has revealed the physical toll that the antepenultimate episode of the series took on her.
Speaking exclusively to TechRadar, O’Flynn, who plays fan-favorite character Patricia, revealed that she lost her voice while filming the eighth chapter of the Apple TV Original. The reason? All the screams she made as part of the last entry in the series.
Full spoilers immediately follow For Widows Bay episode 8, titled “Your Baggage”. Come back now if you’re not caught up.
As Tom and Wyck appear to end the island’s centuries-old curse in last week’s episode, the couple and Patricia quietly celebrate a job well done.
Or so they think, as “Your Baggage” reveals that Richard Warren’s death did not end the curse plaguing the titular town. Indeed, this is clear from its Patricia-centric storyline, which sees O’Flynn’s eccentric self pursued by The Boogeyman. This is the serial killer who murdered many girls on the island years earlier and with whom Patricia claims to have survived her own terrifying ordeal.
Centered around a classic horror story chase setting, “Your Baggage” sees The Boogeyman relentlessly following Patricia – at night, no less – through the eponymous colony. And, although filming the entire sequence didn’t take much time, it was nonetheless a physically exhausting experience that temporarily left its mark on O’Flynn.
“It was physically exhausting,” O’Flynn said of filming the eighth episode of the Apple TV show. “I mean, it’s just me running and screaming for what seems like forever! It actually only took two nights. [to film]but I ended up losing my voice the first night because I wasn’t used to yelling that much – and that’s not ideal when you have a whole other night of yelling and arguing ahead.
Despite the physical strain this week’s episode placed on O’Flynn, that was clear from my conversation with Widows BayThe Breakout star clearly enjoyed the whole experience. Indeed, after playing his ShoutFrom the chase scene to the showdown between Patricia and The Boogeyman, O’Flynn had a blast filming the latest chapter of the hot series.
“I don’t think I ever thought I would make my own version of a Shout chase sequence,” O’Flynn told me. “It was surreal and incredible, and almost an out-of-body experience because I grew up watching these and other iconic horror films.
“And then to have a ‘final girl’ moment – I hadn’t heard of it before I started doing press for this series – with Patricia wielding a shotgun, that was really satisfying for Patricia in particular. She was the one who finally found her own power and became this badass at the end, which was very satisfying for me.”
With only two more episodes of Widows Bay left up in the air, it’s no surprise that, among myriad other conversations about the show’s plot and ongoing mysteries, fans want to know if it will be renewed for another season.
Widows Bay Guest star Hamish Linklater didn’t reveal anything when I asked him if he knew season 2 was in the works. Considering O’Flynn is a key member of the cast, surely showrunner Katie Dippold had told him privately that Apple had given the green light for another 10-part episode?
“My lips are sealed,” O’Flynn replied when I pressed her on the subject. “What I will say is that as Patricia, I would happily continue to live and play in this weird and wonderful world because I love working with everyone on the show.”
Widows Bay Episodes 1-8 are now available to stream on Apple TV, aka one of the best streaming services in the world.
