He advised people to stay away from streams and river channels during periods of high flow
ISLAMABAD:
The NDMA on Friday warned of an expected increase in water flow in the Indus River after the opening of the spillways of the Tarbela Dam.
According to the NDMA, the release of water from spillways is expected to significantly increase river flow in downstream areas along the Indus. The authority urged the public to avoid recreational and tourist activities along the river, warning that strong currents could pose serious risks.
He also advised people to stay away from streams and river channels during periods of high flow.
The NDMA said higher water flows are particularly expected in low-lying areas along the Indus River, particularly in Layyah, Bhakkar and Mianwali districts.
He attributes the increased flow of the river to rapid melting of glaciers caused by rising temperatures, combined with precipitation in upper watersheds.
The authority said it was continuously monitoring the developing situation, carrying out prior risk assessments and ensuring the timely dissemination of necessary information to relevant departments and the public to minimize potential dangers.
