American midfielder Johnny Cardoso has sprained his right ankle five weeks before the World Cup, his club, Atletico Madrid, announced on Thursday.
Atletico said Cardoso was injured in training and would undergo rehabilitation. The club did not give a timetable for his return, but said in a statement on its English-speaking social media channels that “he will undergo physiotherapy and rehabilitation sessions at the gym, and the progress of his recovery will determine his return to competition.”
There are four rounds left in La Liga and Atletico are aiming for a top-four finish.
The United States will begin its World Cup campaign June 13 against Paraguay in Inglewood, California. They will then also face Australia and Turkey in Group D.
Cardoso, 24, has 23 appearances for the United States since his debut in 2020.
Atletico were knocked out by Arsenal in the Champions League semi-finals this week.
