Anthropic disabled all access to its new AI models, Fable 5 and Mythos, on Friday June 12, 2026.
The move comes after the U.S. Commerce Department raised national security concerns about its exports to foreign nationals.
Anthropic released a statement on its portal and said it had been ordered to ban foreign nationals from using Claude Fable 5, a program the company itself described as “too powerful.”
“The net effect of this order is that we must abruptly disable Fable 5 and Mythos 5 for all of our customers to ensure compliance,” the AI company added.
Claude Fable 5 is a version of Anthropic’s Claude Mythos, a competitor to rival AI models such as OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini.
However, Anthropic stressed that U.S. national security officials failed to understand the specific concerns.
“It is our understanding that the government believes it has become aware of a method to circumvent or ‘jailbreak’ Fable 5,” the company wrote.
As a reminder, Anthropic and the Trump administration have been at odds for some time.
The two sides are engaged in a legal battle over an order banning government agencies from using Anthropic’s powerful AI tools.
Anthropic is filing a lawsuit against the Pentagon after Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth called it a supply chain risk.
After Anthropic challenged the Trump administration’s directive in court, the US judge rejected the Pentagon’s directive.
