Right away, Battlefield 6 It looks like it’s in a bit of a difficult situation. After a record launch, Steam player numbers have plateaued (according to SteamDB data) and while the game remains one of the most played on the platform, its population is less than 10% of the high peak.
Developer Battlefield Studios (a combination of Electronic Arts’ Dice, Criterion, Ripple Effect and Motive) was hit with layoffs earlier this year, which many speculated was the result of the game failing to retain players as expected.
Still, the team is working hard to release regular updates with the latest season 3, launching today. It features much of what fans have been asking for: the greatest Battlefield 6 map again, in a remake of the beloved Railway to Golmud from Battleground 4an assortment of new weapons and a ranked battle royale game.
Ahead of the season launch, executive producer Philippe Ducharme told TechRadar Gaming that the team wanted to find “the right balance” with the added map.
“We talked about the Season 3 maps. We also alluded to the Season 4 maps, which are also very big maps,” he said.
“We’re looking at this as an overall portfolio, making sure we provide cards that fit well with different playstyles and season themes. We needed to have larger sized cards, which we’re fulfilling now with Golmud and which we’ll continue to repeat for seasons to come.”
While their predominance was a common complaint at launch, that doesn’t mean small maps (often called “meat grinders” by players) are going away.
“Meat Grinders are always fun. They’re different and can be very frustrating, but they’re also fun and engaging cards,” Ducharme argued. “It’s about making sure we are able to strike the right balance of what we offer our players each season to make them excited to come back.”
He added that the team is “actively committed to improving the experience” with each new update. “Every season we deliver new content that is extremely compelling, exciting for players, it’s different,” he continued. “We are also 100% committed to ensuring that the overall experience, the foundation that we have built, continues to improve.”
We’ll have to wait and see if Season 3 brings back Exhalations Battlefield 6 players, or even attract new ones, but if you want to try the game, you can buy it on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and Series S, and PC right now.
