Can Ethereum be really deprived? The developers put pressure for an encrypted guy, confidentiality by default

When the US government sanctioned the Ethereum -based Cryptography mixture in cash in 2022, it sparked a debate within the cryptographic community which continues three years later.

Tornado allowed users to transfer the crypto anonymously. The government argued that the service had facilitated money laundering, which prompted some of the validators and manufacturers of Ethereum blocks to take action to avoid engaging with tornado -related transactions, which has rendered the service slower and more expensive to use.

The defenders argued that respect for the sanctions was equivalent to censorship – undermining a fundamental principle of Cypherepunk. President Donald Trump supported the Cyphenpunks and raised the Tornado cash sanctions in March of this year, but for some developers of Ethereum, the situation has highlighted a defect within the network that still exists today: why should users depend on third-party applications to transform the network into private?

“The transaction graphs accessible to the public allow anyone to retrace the flow of funds between the accounts, and the sales are visible for all the participants of the network, undergoing financial private life,” said the safety researcher of the crypto in Pascal Caversaccio on Wednesday in a blog article. “Although the transparency of the Ethereum network promotes confidence, it also opens the door to potential monitoring, targeting and exploitation.”

Perhaps emblazon by recent tornado cash developments, Ethereum developers and researchers have started to discuss ideas to make the Ethereum network at the base.

“Confidentiality should not be an optional functionality that users must consciously activate – it must be the default of the network,” said Caversaccio, whose message described its vision of an Ethereum roadmap focused on confidentiality. “Ethereum’s architecture must be designed to ensure that users are private by default, not by exception.”

The Caversaccio post has identified several potential interventions – some news, some old people – which he said could make Ethereum more private for end users. An idea is to encrypt the public mempool of Ethereum – where transactions are sent before being registered permanently. Another involves making Ethereum transactions confidential thanks to zero knowledge cryptography, new transaction formats and other methods.

“Today, Ethereum operates in a partial confidentiality and opt -in model, where users must take deliberate measures to hide their financial activities – often at the cost of conviviality, accessibility and even efficiency,” wrote Caversaccio. “This paradigm must change. Confidentiality preservation technologies must be deeply integrated into the protocol, allowing transactions, intelligent contracts and network interactions to be intrinsically confidential.”

In response to the Caversaccio post, the co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, left a comment on the main forum of the network developer with his own Ethereum road leaf focused on privacy.

Buterin has suggested focusing on the confidentiality of payments on the chain, anxious activity on the chain in applications, making communications on the anonymous network and privatizing readings on the chain.

To achieve all of this, Buterin has listed various stages such as the integration of certain third -party confidentiality features in the central network.

One of the most substantial interventions suggested by Buterin is to move the network to an “address by application” model – a difference compared to today’s system, where a single application can use dozens of wallets for different features. “This is a major step, and this implies significant convenience sacrifices, but the OMI is a bullet that we must bite, because it is the most practical way to remove public links between all your activities on different applications,” wrote Buterin.

According to Buterin, if all its suggestions are implemented, private transactions could be the default value on Ethereum.

The discussion on confidentiality occurs a few weeks before the next major upgrade of Ethereum, Pectra, who does not have the major accent on confidentiality. Ethereum developers are also currently planning the network upgrade in Fusaka. The changes to be included in this hard fork are not yet placed in stone.
