People who were hoping Henry Ruggs III could be paroled Thursday were adamant that he had improved as a person, that he was remorseful for the crash that killed a woman in a car crash in 2021 and that he was ready to reenter society. That wasn’t enough for the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners.
The board denied Ruggs’ request for parole, and he may not be released on parole until 2027, when a mandatory parole date will be set.

It’s been nearly five years since Ruggs, a 2020 first-round draft pick of the Las Vegas Raiders, drove his sports car at speeds of up to 155 mph and crashed into a vehicle driven by Tina Tintor.
Tintor, 23, and his dog, Max, were killed when their car violently caught fire.

Prosecutors at the time said Ruggs was legally intoxicated. He had a blood alcohol level of 0.16, twice the legal limit, when tested within the required two hours after the crash.
Ruggs spent the evening of November 2, 2021, at Topgolf, a sports entertainment venue in Las Vegas, according to prosecutors.

Ruggs pleaded guilty in May 2023 to felony drunk driving causing death and vehicular manslaughter. He was sentenced in August 2023 to three to ten years in prison.

The prison sentence effectively ended Ruggs’ NFL career, although some whisper that he would like to attempt a comeback when he is eventually released. He would be 28 years old if released before the 2027 NFL season.
Ruggs, meanwhile, earned his bachelor’s degree at the University of Alabama, participated in prison work programs and administration programs, including at the Nevada Governor’s Mansion as part of a state inmate work program, and expressed remorse over the incident.

This apparently was not enough for the Council.
The Associated Press reported that Ruggs will appear before the parole board again three months before his mandatory parole date of Aug. 24, 2027, according to Kathi Baker, executive director of the Nevada Board of Parole Commissioners.
